Telescopic Technology
In 1671, Sir Isaac Newton built the first reflecting telescope which used a mirror to collect light. Today, most telescopes used by astronomers in observatories are reflectors, like Newton's invention. They are, however, much larger. The telescopes have very large mirrors that can gather a lot of light. This lets astronomers see farther into space. Some telescopes have mirrors as wide as houses.
In the 1850s, Robert Kirchoff and Robert Bunsen invented the spectroscope, an adaptation used many telescopes today. The spectroscope breaks light into its separate colors, called a spectrum. The colors of the spectrum give the astronomer information about the chemical makeup of stars in the sky.
